Alphonse Mucha (1860–1939) was a Czech artist who rose to fame in Paris in the 1890s with his posters for the actress Sarah Bernhardt.

His elegant women framed by flowing hair, flowers and halos became the signature look of Art Nouveau. Later in life he returned to his homeland and devoted himself to The Slav Epic, a series of monumental paintings.
