The Story Behind
By Katsushika Hokusai
"The Fuji from Gotenyama," by Katsushika Hokusai, created between 1830 and 1832, is another masterful woodblock print from his celebrated series "Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji." This vibrant scene captures a spring day with groups of people picnicking and enjoying the cherry blossoms on Gotenyama Hill in Shinagawa. In the distance, framed by the lush pink cherry trees and the calm blue waters of the bay, stands the majestic, snow-capped Mount Fuji. The composition beautifully balances the human activity in the foreground with the timeless grandeur of the sacred mountain, showcasing Hokusai's keen eye for both everyday life and iconic Japanese landscapes. The delicate pinks of the blossoms against the vibrant blues and yellows are characteristic of the ukiyo-e style.
