The Story Behind

This early print shows the Statue of Liberty as it appeared in the late 19th century, soon after its unveiling in 1886. Gifted by France to celebrate American independence, the statue stood as a symbol of liberty and welcome to immigrants arriving by sea.

The illustration captures the statue on Bedloe’s Island, now Liberty Island, with tall ships and steamers filling New York Harbor — a powerful image of hope, arrival, and a new world.

An iconic piece of American visual history, and a classic example of 19th-century lithographic art.
